According to a new survey in the International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education, swimming can help you live longer than walking and jogging. Swimmers are half as likely to die prematurley as those who take regular strolls or runs, thanks to the positive impact it has on your heart and lungs..................SO COME ON EVERYONE.................TAKE THE PLUNGE!!

The support of the water greatly reduces stress and impact on joints such as ankles, knees, hips and the spine. The body is relieved of 70 - 80% of its weight whilst in the water. This makes swimming an ideal activity for people recovering from an injury, people with back pain, arthritis or knee problems, older people, those carrying excess weight and pregnant women. Swimming increases the amount of mobility in stiff joints, as well as helping to rebuild the muscles around the affected joints.

Simply being immersed in water will give immediate relief to tired and sore joints. Swimming helps you unwind and de-stress and the weightlessness of the water can be very relaxing. Swimming is an activity that can be continued for a lifetime, by varying your strokes you can work every major muscle group including your heart and lungs and is low impact. Because of the pressure and resistance of the water your body has to work a little harder, therefore 30 minutes of activity in the water is equivalent to 45 minutes of the same activity on land. The water pressure also adds to the muscle pressure exerted on the veins to aid in returning blood to the heart and lungs, giving the circulatory system a great workout.

But remember start of slowly if you haven't swum for some time and consult your doctor before undertaking any physical activity if you suffer from any serious physical ailment or have any concerns.

At S.O.S. SWIM SCHOOL we have lessons for all abilities, from the nervous beginner to improvers (maybe you can swim one stroke and would like to learn other strokes, or would like to improve your technique to swim more efficiently). We also offer lane swimming with SWIM FIT programs - if you can swim competently and want to swim regularly, wether you want to swim for your health, or to shape up and tone, or to improve your fitness. We have exclusive use of the pool during these sessions, so no spectators, all in a friendly and supportive environment.

By learning to swim you can join in with the fun in the water with your children, grandchildren and with friends. Have you sat on the poolside whilst on holiday just wishing you could jump in and have a splash? Once you can swim confidently it can open up other possibilities - sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, waterski-ing, the possibilities are endless, so what's stopping you? S.O.S. SWIM SCHOOL looks forward to helping you with your aquatic education and experience.
